C46200 Naval Brass is a tin-bearing copper-zinc alloy built for marine and subsea service, offering good strength, hot formability, and reliable seawater corrosion resistance for shafts, hardware, and fittings. Supplied to ASTM B21 / B171.

Product Overview

C46200 Naval Brass is a wrought copper-zinc-tin alloy (about 63% copper, balance zinc, 0.5-1.0% tin) developed for marine and subsea service. The added tin improves strength and corrosion resistance over standard brass, especially against seawater and salt-spray exposure, making it a long-standing choice for ship and offshore hardware.

Supplied mainly as rod, bar, and shapes to ASTM B21 and as plate/sheet to ASTM B171, C46200 offers tensile strength from about 330 MPa (annealed) to 440 MPa or more (hard tempers) with good ductility in softer conditions. It has excellent hot workability and forgeability (forgeability rated around 90%), fair cold workability, and a machinability rating near 30% of free-cutting brass. Electrical conductivity sits at about 26% IACS, supporting moderate electrical use but not high-current paths.

For non-standard diameters, hex, or cut-to-length naval brass, Linsy Copper supports low-MOQ custom production with typical lead times of 10-60 days based on grade, size, and processing. Our Shenzhen factory provides in-house CNC machining, cutting, and surface finishing, and issues an MTR/MTC for every order, with optional SGS testing available on request for marine or project compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about C46200 naval brass composition, standards, seawater use, and temper selection.

Both are tin-bearing naval brasses covered by ASTM B21. C46200 contains 62-65% copper, while C46400 contains slightly less copper (59-62%), giving C46400 a marginally different strength and corrosion balance. C46400 is the more common standard naval brass; C46200 is selected when its specific composition is called out.
Rod, bar, and shapes are covered by ASTM B21; plate and sheet by ASTM B171. Fasteners made from the alloy follow ASTM F467/F468.
Yes. The tin addition gives it reliable resistance to seawater and salt-spray corrosion, which is why it is used for shafts, hardware, and fittings in marine and subsea environments. For prolonged high-velocity seawater, verify dezincification resistance for the specific project.
As hot extruded (M30) and soft annealed (O60) grades deliver about 330-345 MPa tensile with 30% elongation. Half-hard (H02) runs 360-440 MPa, and hard (H04) reaches 440 MPa minimum with yield around 275 MPa and elongation near 13%, trading ductility for strength.
It machines at roughly 30% of free-cutting brass and welds, brazes, and solders well, though oxyacetylene welding is only fair. Its excellent hot formability (forgeability ~90%) makes it well suited to forged marine components.
