C28000 brass, commonly known as Muntz Metal, is a high-strength copper-zinc alloy offering good corrosion resistance, hot workability, and durability. It is widely used in marine hardware, architectural components, condenser systems, and heavy industrial applications.
Lead Time: 3-5 Business Days

Product Overview

C28000 brass, also referred to as Muntz Metal, is a copper-zinc alloy containing approximately 60% copper with higher zinc content for improved strength and cost efficiency. It is manufactured to ASTM B36, ASTM B134, and related standards for industrial and structural applications requiring reliable mechanical performance.

Produced through rolling, extrusion, and drawing processes, C28000 brass offers good hot working characteristics, stable dimensional properties, and reliable corrosion resistance in industrial environments. Its combination of strength, durability, and processability makes it suitable for both engineering and marine applications.

C28000 brass is extensively used in marine fasteners, condenser plates, architectural hardware, and industrial fabrication where strength and corrosion resistance are important. It is widely applied across marine engineering, HVAC, construction, energy, and heavy manufacturing industries.

Frequently Asked Questions About C28000 Muntz Metal

Practical engineering answers on C28000 (Muntz Metal, 60/40 brass) composition, tempers, hot vs cold work, standards and sourcing.

C28000, also called Muntz Metal or 60/40 brass, is a duplex alpha+beta copper-zinc alloy with 59.0-63.0% Cu and Zn balance (about 37-41%), plus up to 0.30% Pb and 0.07% Fe. It sits at the high-zinc end of the wrought brasses - roughly 60% Cu versus 70% in C26000 cartridge brass and 90% in C22000 commercial bronze. The higher zinc gives it greater strength and hardness but lower cold ductility.
In the as-hot-rolled (M20) temper tensile strength is about 275-380 MPa; in the hard (H04) temper it reaches roughly 485-585 MPa. Elongation drops from about 45% annealed to roughly 10% at H04. Yield strength in service tempers runs about 200-390 MPa depending on cold work.
C28000 is optimized for hot work - hot formability is rated excellent (forging, hot rolling, stamping at about 700-900 deg C). Cold formability is only fair; it work-hardens quickly and needs frequent annealing between reductions, so it is not the first choice for deep drawing the way low-zinc brasses such as C26000 or C21000 are.
Common ASTM specs are B36/B36M for sheet, strip and rolled bar, B432 for plate and B171 for condenser and heat-exchanger plates, with B124 covering rod and shapes. It is supplied as sheet, plate, rod, bar and profiles in tempers from annealed (O60) through H04/H06. The EN equivalent is CuZn40 (CW509L).
Yes. Linsy Copper supplies C28000 sheet, plate and bar against ASTM B36/B432/B171 with mill test reports (MTR/MTC) on every order and SGS reports available on request. Custom tempers, sizes and small trial lots are supported with typical lead times of 10-60 days, low minimum order quantities, and RoHS/REACH-compliant documentation.
